Treatment for Noise Phobia
Behavior modification in pets is based upon basic principles which are tightly connected; counter-conditioning, desensitization, response substitution, and reinforcement.  A basic understanding of these will facilitate any treatment protocol:
Key point:  Neither punish nor comfort your dog when he/she shows fear
•  Punishment will worsen the state of fear.
•  Comforting acts as a reward & will inadvertently reinforce the fearful behavior.
Desensitization and counter-conditioning for noise phobia:
•  Purchase a CD or make a recording of meaningful sounds
•  Determine whether your dog reacts to the CD
    -  Try several different CD’s and a moderate to high volume.  Watch for trembling, hiding, panting, or ears placed back.
Protocol:
1) Start by playing the noise CD at a volume that your dog does NOT react to
2) Use a relaxation technique to counter-condition your dog
3) Gradually increase the volume to the next level, but avoid eliciting a fear response; go slowly
4) If your dog shows fear when you increase the volume, wait for one minute to see if your dog relaxes
5) If your dog does not relax, decrease the volume to the previous level
6) Try to have a counter-conditioning session at least once a day
7) Record the date and duration of the session and the maximum volume reached
8) Describe your dog’s behavior during the session (This will enable you to track progress & will provide a database for your veterinarian or behaviorist)
